The world’s biggest democracy is all set for general elections from April 7th, 2109 to May 12th, 2019. The very fact in these elections is the rise of the young and first time voters is dramatically high. Around half of India’s 1.2 billion people are under 26 years. Over 100m voters have been added to the to the electorate since 2009. Recent state elections show turnout is higher and people are unusually eager to vote.

Voting will take place in 35 states and union territories.

There are roughly 543 equal constituencies, each sending a single member of parliament.

Each constituency has typically 1.5 million voters.

The whole electorate is whopping 815 million people, the populations of America and the EU combined.
The addition of first time new voters ‘born frees’ are the vanguard of the huge number so is the electoral literacy and awareness for the best practices on how to vote.
To raise and raise awareness among youngsters about the electoral system the Delhi Public School, Chattarpur, Madhya Pradesh imparted practical activity to make the children connect with their textbook learning with the surroundings, apply their knowledge to real situations and understand the relevance to the topics taught.
NexSchools connected with Mrs. Vatsala Singh to understand this much needed activity and its relevance. Here is the report to know how to conduct the activity and outcome.
REPORT ABOUT ACTIVITY DONE BY STUDENTS ON ELECTION (11/12/18)
The state of Madhya Pradesh is having general elections for the state & hence it was the best time to make the children connect their text book learning with the surroundings. The practical activities help children apply their knowledge to real situations & understand the relevance to the topics taught.
General description –
Students of Grade 5(A) performed activity based on the topic Election in class in which students participated in the election through secret ballot for class monitor.
Procedure of activity –
a) Firstly students selected 3 candidates for class monitor by keeping in mind the qualities for class leader.
b) Every candidate appealed for the vote by giving a speech in their favour & trying to convince the classmates to vote for them as a class monitor.
c) Chits are distributed among students which contain the names of the all the three candidates contesting for the class monitor.
d) One secret ballot box is placed on the table in which each student came one by one with a chit & his /her figure was marked by the black ink by the officer Incharge after that student put chit in the ballot box to vote for the chosen candidate.
e) After that votes were counted and tallied by the counting Incharge students. The result was declared & the person who got the maximum number of votes, that candidate becomes the Class Monitor.
OUTCOME OF THE ACTIVITY-
· This activity encourages the students to participate in a decision making process through the election.
· With this activity students understand the voting procedure in the election.
· Learn about the importance of elections in choosing a leader.
· Understand the importance of secret ballot and how it is different from open voting.
· Learn about the qualities of a good leader.
· Know about the age limit to vote and why the finger is marked by black –ink while voting.
· They understand the strength & importance of majority in a Democracy.
· They understand the power of people & their involvement in decision making & making of government.
· They understand how to make a judgment about the right person & who is best person to represent them. They truly understand the concept of Democracy – Of the People, By the People & For the People!
