What is PTA?

PTA is affiliated to schools, with an objective to promote parental involvement in the educational success of children. It is the powerful voice for the well-being of children, it gives parents a platform to make a difference in their child’s school by raising issues that affect our children and matter the most for better future. It facilitates a working relationship between school management, administrators, teachers and parents.

History of PTA
PTA has become an integral part of schools around the world. The history of PTA goes back to over 100 years. It was founded in 1897 in the United States of America as the National Congress of Mothers by Alice McLellan Birney and Phoebe Apperson Hearst.
The founders dreamt of changing parents, children, and families. Now it has become a powerful voice for all children in countries across the world.

All unaided government schools, permanently unaided institutions, schools affiliated with various organisations must form PTA, it includes -state education boards, ICSE, CBSE, IB etc.

Meeting Opportunity Differently: PTA meetings are very different from Parents Teacher Meetings(PTMs) it gives you an opportunity to meet teachers, peer parents and discuss common issues concerning entire school. You can share ideas, experiences and concerns.

How to Join PTA?
Ideally, all recognized primary and secondary schools must form PTA within one month or 30 days after the commencement of the new academic year. Every parent whose child is enrolled in the school automatically becomes PTA member.
It is seen lately that school allows only those parents to be a PTA member who fills the registration form for the PTA.
PTA Working Committee: It is mandatory for school to democratically form PTA working committee within two weeks of formation of PTA, and meeting for this purpose should be served to all concerned people one week before the meeting day.
The idea to serve advance notice for meeting for election committee is to get maximum parents involved in the process of forming the executive committee.
One teacher and one parent will be part of the executive committee of each grade.

Who should nominate themselves for Executive Committee?
The committee works towards the betterment of the school and on behalf of many hundreds or a thousand parents depending on the strength of the school. It is responsibility and trust of other parents that get one seat on the table to discuss core issues with school management, therefore, nominate yourself only if you can commit yourself towards it voluntarily and passionate about the cause.
