How did I know every drop of water counts?
It was a beautiful and refreshing morning. I saw rain pattering gently on my room's window. I was so excited to see water everywhere in my frontward. I started playing in this pleasant weather. Then, I noticed my mother was watching me angrily as I was getting late for my routine work. She exclaimed, go and get ready fast, your online classes will start in 30 minutes. I checked the clock, oh, it was 8:30 AM. I rushed to the washroom. I started brushing my teeth. I heard my mom again, she was shouting at me, keep your tap closed, you are wasting a lot of water. I closed the tap. And, I went to bathe. I love to take showers and it takes me longer to finish my bath. My mom came to me and said you are very careless, you waste water a lot. I prompted “what will happen if I waste water”? My mother said if we waste water today, we will not get enough water for our basic necessities in the future.
She further explained, globally, 844 million people lack access to clean water because we waste water in many ways. People leave taps running, throw water that remained unused, most of the people take shower and similarly, in washing and cleaning most of the water is wasted. And this is how water crisis can spread.
I quickly countered, God gives us so much water in the form of rain, rivers even oceans. How can we get short of water? She came with a fact and said as per report “In the last 2 successive years there has been less rain and it caused drought in agricultural lands. Therefore, farmers could not grow crops. Lack of rain water is disastrous for the farmers. This has made ruler people to shift to cities. Though, surface water like Rivers, lakes and ponds are great sources of water and easily accessible than underground water sources, but in summer, water from these resources get evaporated and we face difficulty in irrigating our crops.
How does water crisis affect us?
On a warm sunny day I was visiting a temple with my Grandparents. After performing prayer, we visited the nearby village for distributing some food. My grandfather said that “ This year villagers faced drought due to less rain so they didn’t have enough food to eat so we distributed food to the villagers”. After coming back home I asked my grandfather how does drought affect food production. My grandfather replied “because of less rain, farmers were not able to irrigate their crops well and it hampered the growth of crops ”.
Adding on he said “ in many rural areas people face water crisis cause of less rain and improper access to groundwater resources. In future, water crisis can be a big concern in urban areas too.
Most of Earths surface is covered by water and it is surprising to know that only 3%of the water is fresh . Therefore, water scarcity is an important issue for world population. Million's of people die due to unhygienic water .
Causes of Water Scarcity
1. Pollution- Pollution can come in many forms and almost always makes the water unfit not only for human consumption but for animals and plants too.
2. Overuse and Misuse – Overuse and Misuse of water is very common everywhere . The overuse of water in irrigation, domestic works, watering plants, washing of cloths, bathing animals can be reduced with proper estimation and planning.
3. Improper storage of water – We don’t have proper arrangements for water storage in our country. Most of rain water gets wasted cause of no storage.
4. We also waste water while watering our plants. We should plant native plants because they need less water. Be aware we should never water plants in the afternoon because the water gets evaporated by the suns heat and that wastes a lot of water .
This way my grandfather explained me how water crisis can make our life tough and difficult to live.
After this wiseful conversation with my Grandfather, I decided to educate others about water crisis concern and planned to make them aware of water wastage. If everyone will voluntarily save water now,we can avoid water scarcity in future.
