Is technology controlling your child? Find the answer in NexSchools in-depth review of the movie CTRL. Discover the dangers of AI, why this gripping movie is a wake up call for parents and what you need to know to protect your child from unseen online threats

CTRL, currently streaming on Netflix is a captivating tech thriller that resonates deeply with Gen Z. Directed by Vikramaditya Motwane and featuring Ananya Panday, the film delves into the alarming ways technology influences our lives. I felt compelled to review it, as it powerfully illustrates the consequences of mindlessly engaging with technology and the potential dangers of our digital ignorance. I beleive it serves as a wake up call for parents too.

The story centers on Nella, a young woman who uses an AI assistant to erase her ex-boyfriend from her digital footprint, only to realize the dark consequences of outsourcing control to technology.

CTRL Is A Cautionary Tale, More than Just A Tech Thriller

At first glance, CTRL might seem like another tech-thriller, but it’s much more. CTRL takes audiences on a journey that goes beyond a standard thriller, it taps into our growing reliance on technology and its hidden dangers. The movie follows Nella, a carefree college student, who turns to AI to clean up her digital past. But in doing so, she uncovers something far more sinister.

It captures our growing dependence on technology. The movie’s narrative taps into the hidden dangers of our digital habits, echoing real-life issues Gen Z and today’s youth face. CTRL shows the dangers lurking behind the screen, urging a closer look at the digital footprints we leave behind.

Why Parents Can't Afford to Ignore CTRL?

Parents, as the gatekeepers of their children’s online lives, should take note of this film. CTRL shows us that it’s no longer just about how much screen time kids have; it's about understanding the digital tools they use and encouraging safe online practices. Parents, too, play a crucial role in guiding their children through the complexities of technology use.

The film highlights the necessity for parents to stay informed about the digital tools their children use and to fembrace open conversations about online safety and privacy. By doing so, they can help their children make informed decisions, make happier and safer online expereinces and avoid the pitfalls depicted in CTRL.

1. Screen Time Isn’t the Real Problem, It’s What’s Hiding Behind the Screen

Forget the screen-time debates. CTRL exposes a much bigger issue, it’s not how long your kids are online, but what they’re doing and who’s watching. The film shines a light on AI assistants, and digital tools can quietly influence your child's behavior and decisions in ways you might not even realize.

2. Do You Really Know What Your Kids Are Using Online?

In the age of AI assistants and smart devices, handing your child a phone isn’t as simple as it seems. CTRL reminds parents that staying in the dark about the apps, platforms, and tools their children use can have serious consequences. Staying informed is the only way to ensure your child’s online safety.

3. Are You Having the Critical Conversations About Online Privacy?

If you’re only talking to your kids about screen time, you’re missing the bigger picture. The stress should be on open, ongoing conversations with your kids about online privacy, privacy risks, and the potential dangers of oversharing. These conversations can empower them to make safer choices.

If you're only focusing on limiting screen time, you’re missing the bigger picture.

4. AI and Digital Assistants Are The Invisible Threats You’re Overlooking

AI seems helpful, but CTRL reveals how these ‘convenient’ tools can quietly collect data and invade privacy. As a parent, you need to understand the risks posed by AI in your child’s life, because it’s not just technology, it’s a potential privacy minefield.

5. Don’t Let Your Kids Be Controlled by Tech, Guide Them Before It’s Too Late

Without guidance, your child can easily fall into the trap of trusting technology too much. It’s not just schools that need to catch up, parents must take the lead in educating their kids about cyber safety. Thankfully, short, interactive cyber safety courses can build the right mindset for kids, helping them to be informed, resilient, and happy online.

It’s Time for Parents to Take Action

Parents, the conversations about digital safety can no longer be limited to screen time. CTRL is a reminder that we must look deeper into the real risks posed by AI and digital assistants. These technologies are becoming more embedded in our lives each day, making it critical for parents to help their kids understand the consequences of their online actions.

Schools may not be doing enough when it comes to preparing kids for the digital world, so it's time for parents to step up and play catch-up. Parents can take the lead in equipping their children with these essential skills, filling the gap left by traditional education.
