Viral moments come and go, but some signal deeper changes in society. This is one of those moments. It is not just a fleeting controversy; it is part of a broader shift in media and influencer culture. Whether it is celebrities, podcasters, YouTubers or Instagram personalities, the dynamic between content creators and their audiences is evolving - and not always for the better.
Recently, comedian Samay Raina made headlines after social media united in protest, leading him to remove all episodes of his show India’s Got Latent from YouTube and its app. This decision followed a controversial episode featuring Ranveer Allahbadia, where offensive remarks ignited widespread backlash. Following the backlash against Ranveer Allahbadia, the Marathi YouTube channel BhaDiPa also faced criticism for 'filthy' content, leading to show cancellations.
In 2021, the Supreme Court observed that some OTT platforms at times show pornographic content, raising concerns about the lack of regulation and the ease of access for children.
These platforms have open access for our children also. At home the responsibility lies with the parents, however the short form of content such as reels and shorts are created to sensationalise, lure everyone and even if OTT is restricted by parents. Restricting age-inappropriate content that young children are exposed to every day is impossible.
Many young people dream of becoming YouTubers, often neglecting their studies and real-world responsibilities in the process. What they might not realize is that the personas portrayed by celebrities and influencers are meticulously crafted like a product marketring. Moreover, the consequences of influencers actions can sometimes have legal repercussions.
Dr. Prashant Mali, a Cyber Law Advocate and thought leader, articulates this point clearly:
“Gen Z wants experiences, and uttering curse words or listening to genres of comedy that include bad words is an experience they like and appreciate. Police FIRs, bails, trials, court visits—these are experiences that come after a line is crossed and need to be known by Gen Z & Alpha. The lifetime of a bad joke is momentary, but the consequences like a police FIR can stay as a trauma for a long time. Gen Z needs to make some adjustments if they don't want to experience 'trauma,' or they should embrace the experience and not crib.”
The incident has reignited discussions on freedom of expression, ethical content creation, and the responsibility that comes with influence.

"This is not an isolated event. Some films also contain inappropriate content, highlighting the need for regulations to maintain balance." said a parent two teen daughters.
Social media is a powerful tool, not just for creators but also for those holding them accountable. When parents, celebrities, politicians, and journalists speak out, change happens. The question remains - how do we strike a balance between creative freedom and ethical responsibility?
However, the responsibility does not lie solely with influencers. OTT platforms, filmmakers, and digital content creators contribute to normalizing certain behaviors - casual derogatory language, drug abuse glorified as rebellion, smoking portrayed as an act of defiance. The younger generation absorbs these messages, often without distinguishing where entertainment ends and real-life influence begins.
Influence is a double-edged sword. One day, it brings instant fame; the next, it leads to irreversible consequences. Ethical content creation is not about censorship but about recognizing that words and actions have an impact.
One parent, Radhika Srivasan, went on to say, "If we can have laws that protect animals from cruelty during a film shoot, why can't we have something similar to safeguard the young, impressionable minds of children and youth?"
This sentiment aligns with a powerful quote: "If you are silent, then you are part of the injustice too." It serves as a reminder that the digital world is shaped by those who speak up. In an era where viral trends can build or break reputations, silence is not an option.
