Global Media and Information Literacy Week Youth Hackathon 2024

About the Hackathon:
The Youth Hackathon is a key part of the Global MIL Week, providing a platform for youth to engage and innovate. It encourages youth-led initiatives that align with the Week’s theme, particularly focusing on the expanding role of digital content creators and influencers in today’s information landscape, and addressing challenges brought by artificial intelligence (AI).

Tasks and Challenges

Participants will be tasked with designing innovative solutions around one of the following topics:

  • Empowering youth to actively shape their digital environments and promote public interest information.
  • Exploring innovative solutions to the challenges posed by AI.
  • Developing effective approaches to Media and Information Literacy Education and Capacity Building through peer education.
  • Activating Youth Organizations as agents of change in collaboration with digital content creators.

Timeline

  • 5 July 2024: Registration opens
  • 26 August 2024: Registration ends
  • 28-29 August 2024: Online mentoring program for all participants
  • 8 September 2024: Deadline for submissions
  • 9-20 September 2024: Judging process
  • 31 October 2024: Presentation of winning projects at the Global MIL Week Conference in Amman, Jordan

Eligibility

  • Teams of 3-5 members (gender parity required)
  • Participants aged 18-30 years old
  • Must adhere to UNESCO’s values of peace, respect for diversity, and freedom of expression
  • No prior experience required

Solution Categories

Submission Requirements

Each submission must include:

  • A document outlining the solution
  • A 3-minute video pitch (creative formats are encouraged)
  • Must cover:
    • Team composition
    • Problem statement, objectives, audience, and alignment with the challenges
    • Prototype explanation
    • Feasibility
    • Sustainability
    • Creativity
    • Deployment strategies/Business model and market validation
