Do you have a ‘happy space’ that brings out the best in you, and keeps you centered during tough times? I do! Read on to find out what mine is.
I have loved food shows since I was a baby. One of my mother’s fondest memories is of me trying to grab food out of the television set during a food show, and wailing because I couldn’t. I still love watching them, especially Masterchef Australia, with my family.
Most people think cooking is a chore, but I think magic happens in the kitchen. I feel it is an enchanted place where the most mundane sights, sounds and smells are transformed into something else. Here are some of the things that fascinate me:
-
Pasta bubbling in boiling water as it doubles in size and fills the saucepan
-
Sliced onions crackling in oil till they caramelize and turn into a lovely golden-brown
-
Garlic tadka which you can smell from a mile away
-
The smokiness of roasted eggplant
-
The smell of freshly brewed coffee
-
Dough balls being rolled out and puffed up on a hot stove
-
The texture of smooth, creamy yoghurt mixed with juicy diced cucumbers and crunchy peanut crush to make a simple salad
-
The queer smell of curdled cream giving way to the wholesome aroma of rich golden ghee
-
Pancake batter spluttering and breaking out into tiny bubbles on a hot griddle
-
The perfect dome of a freshly baked cake
-
Fresh homemade cookies crumbling inside my mouth
The kitchen is my happy space. I love cooking with my mother when my sister is blabbering in the background. I love it when my father flips pancakes in the air instead of using a spatula. I enjoy listening to music on my headphones when I am kneading dough. I have fun making bite-sized snacks for my sister. I like to make rotis even if they turn out to be an odd shape. I like experimenting and trying out simple recipes. But the only thing I don’t like doing is washing the dishes after I am done.
This pandemic has been very difficult for all of us. Had it not been for good food we would have gone crazy. I am sure you will all agree! So tell me, how do you feel about food or cooking or the kitchen?
