Challenges are not new to us especially as a teacher. Challenges are everyday things to us. Let us enumerate challenges I faced when I opted for the profession as a Pre-KG teacher.
First I was a Pre-KG facilitator. Nursery children are quiet afraid and hesitate to enter in the class on their very first day at school. For the first time they were leaving their parents, warm houses behind them and entering into their new classroom, new environment and a totally new and strange world. So they are quiet frightened and timid. They are incessantly crying and keep asking for their parents. They are constantly saying, “I want to go to my mother.” “ I want to go to my house.” etc. and what not. They all are under trepidation…what to talk? Whom to talk to? How to talk?, as they are short of vocabulary. They wanted to communicate with the teachers, with their peers, but alas! they can’t do it. So first I had to convince them that they are safe and nothing bad happen to them and make them acquainted with the class, maushies (care takers), friends and teachers. To do that I had started with the recitation of the melodious nursery rhyme. Shortly they got mingled easily with jingle song and forget their anxiety and pain of leaving their parents. I also used tambourine to get their attention. Once the personal touch developed between us, the digital world also came to help us. We have a smart board! Hmmm….needless to say nowadays very essential. Harmonious nursery rhymes and animated pictures and characters also of great help to make them settle in the classroom. Listening (Receptive) and speaking (productive) skills developed very fast through this, I think.
Many in our community thought that “nursery teacher” is the easiest task to do. But I think otherwise it is one of the most strenuous jobs to do. It’s not child’s play. You are dealing with human babies and not a machine. They babble in their cute language and we have to extract the meaning out of that babble just like honeybee extract nectar from the sweet flower.
Thus I felt as a Nursery teacher I went through many challenges and I took them in my stride. What about you? Ready for a new day with new innocent faces…..
