The first paintings and sculptures were made around 30,000 years ago. The stone age paintings have been found on rocks and on cave walls in Europe,Africa and Australia.
The stone age sculptures
Some of the earliest sculptures are small figures of people.They are made from stone,ivory,bone and clay.These figures are often of women and use simple shapes and lines.
Lascaux caves
Horses,bulls and other aminals were painted in caves at Lascaux in France. Paint was made from crushing colored rocks into a powderand mixing the powder with water.
Animal carvings
Sculptures of animals, such as mammoths, were carved from animal bones using hard and sharpened stones.Sometimes the sculptor paid more attention to the important features, such as the tusks,making them stand out more than the other parts of the animal.
