Social media is the fastest growing web in the 21st century. The networks like face book, instagram, snap chat, Twitter are becoming an integral part of people’s lives. Majority of the users of social media are the youngsters.
Social media has always fascinated the young and the old alike. Most popular Sites are created for business purpose like education , career , social relationship, providing job opportunities, shopping and many more. Social media also provides great outlet for charities , business and individuals to promote themselves.
Heavy technology often leads to addiction especially in teens and even adults! They spend countless hours on the social sites to stay connected with their friends and families. It has been observed that at the end of the day when the entire family should be sitting together, talking about how the day was spent, majority of the members are seen sitting in different rooms texting or chatting with their friends . The students prefer to study using the social media rather than use books. The use of pub gee game has got the youth in its clutches. Youngsters are seen playing a violent game which in turn affects the child psychogically. By providing personal information on the social media one is again at the risk of cyber stalking and cyber bullying. Symptoms like anxiety, depression and obsessive- complusive disorder can be triggered by the overuse of social media. Social media also causes young adults to compare themselves to others and envy a life that may not be attainable.
In an article” Tweets, Texts, E-mail and posts,” author Tony Dokoupil explored a story regarding a man named Jason Russell. Russell forwarded a link to an internet documentary called” Kony 2012,” which shared his deeply personal web experiences regarding African Warlord Joseph Kony. The film received more than 70million views in less than a week. While the film brought fame to Russell ,it had a significant impact on Russell. Russell began to obsess over the number of vies received and eventually underwent what Doctors called a temporary psychotic break.
I personally feel it is important to use technology to the right level. No doubt it has benefitted the society but one needs to keep in mind the risk that one is exposing one too. It is imperative to remember that the genuine human experience of being able to communicate in person, network in person and form relationships with others outweighs social media. It is also important to remember that the number of likes or shares one receives does not define one’s self-worth. One should strike a balance in the use of social sites and realize that there is much more than just sitting behind the screen all day long.
