The initial years matter the most for a child, when it is trying to make sense of the world around it. At this stage – stories, songs, rhymes, music & movement makes learning easy & fun. Rhythm & rhyme, stories play a very important role in the development & acquisition of early literacy skills. This is because children’s early literacy skills are about listening & speaking rather than reading & writing. Singing rhymes builds rapport between teacher & children. They learn from imitation. As teacher sings & dance, the child follows too. As nursery rhymes are taught with actions like moving hands, jumping, sitting etc. so that children learn what exactly the words mean, it helps in gross & fine motor development. It develops children’s social skills as rhymes are a great group activity. Singing nursery rhymes allows kids – even shy ones- to feel confident about singing, dancing & performing as they are so easy to grasp & fun. It builds their confidence. Various topics like fruits, vegetables, numbers, vehicles can be introduced to young children through rhymes. Stories too play a crucial role in developing children’s overall personality. By listening to stories they develop their sense of imagination. They start building upon the pictures they see in the book and the sounds and tones they hear from the storyteller. Children learn a lot of new words which widens their vocabulary. Stories are also useful for teaching more complex ideas such as the importance of sharing, compassion for others. Moral values can be taught to children through stories. It helps the children to improve listening skills & also increase their sitting capacity. Stories that contain feelings can help them understand & accept their own feelings. This helps the child understand that feelings are normal & should be expressed.
