Water from Narmada canal destroys over 2 lakh metric ton salt
Estimated loss of over 2.20 lakh metric ton salt was reported as nearly150 salt pans were completely submerged and over 250 or a 50 % damage in the little Rann of Kutch. When the water from Narmada canal was allegedly released near dhrangadaza in suren dhranagar district. Several villagers from Ootu and Nimaknagar villagers in little Rann of Kutch, where salt pan.
Workers migrate for salt farming, were submerged in the water that was released from Narmada. Kutch branch canal, they were later rescued. Harinesh Pandya, founder of Agariyas hitrakshak manch, said “ though no casualty was reported many villagers specialy children were rescued when water was released without any warning or prior notice. This has been happening for some years but this time the damage has been huge due to heavy release of water. The villager said that the water was released Sunday night and continued till Monday, leaving the salt pan completely submerged in water. Harinesh explained that the Narmada canal carries more water than its capacity and since the construction of canal is weak, whenever the water is increases, excess is released through siphons which enter the little Rann of Kutch. He added “distributaries have not been constructed for Narmada water to reach farms and also through village co-operatives water was to be distributed each village, which did not happen. With the recent cyclone, the water demand declined and does water levels rise in the dam. Thus it was released without any notice “ the agrayas have asked the state government to stop the practice and are scheduled to submit the representation to the collector on Tuesday.
