In modern times HIV/AID is a fatal disease for which there is only prevention but no cure. Sadly enough HIV/AIDS has spread its tentacles across the globe and is rampant in most of the underdeveloped and developing countries in Asia, Africa and Latin America.
To begin with, trained volunteers visit schools and communities to obtain permission from the governing bodies to carry out their programs. There is an initial survey done on the school/community to determine the degree of information and awareness about the disease. This is to determine the content of the program, because some schools/communities may have a greater knowledge than others and should therefore be taught more advanced topics.
The standard HIV/AIDS program is about 1 hour 30 minutes long, comprising various educational sketches, talks on HIV/AIDS prevention and tolerance, discussions, a video show, presentations and questionnaires. The program teaches its audience behavioral changes to reduce their risk of contracting HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases. Various methods of prevention, e.g., use of condoms, fidelity, avoiding body piercing where HIV/AIDS can be passed through non-sterile needles are also highlighted. There are several general healthcare and sanitation programs that you could assist with. You could also work at the various rehabilitation centers where patients can temporarily stay after having undergone treatment at other hospitals, or at home. Most patients staying in such places are terminally ill; there are many permanent patients, mainly children, who were born with HIV and who were orphaned early on in life. |
